Out & About in October
October was a true reflection of the hills. Walks, emergency skills, support and celebrations for mums in all stages of life.
This month we’ve hosted a huge variety of events, welcomed back some treasured pieces to the MotHs Hub and celebrated our first Check Me Out event and the walkers on the Long Bloody Walk too. Here is a rundown of what’s happened and what to look forward to in November.
Our Beautiful Bench Returns
You might remember us showing off the most beautiful timber waterfall bench from Dark Horse Timber back in July. Alan and the team at Dark Horse Timber had installed it quickly in time for our opening knowing it wasn’t quite ready. After the MotHs Hub Opening, our bench went back for further work and drying before being returned this month. We are so excited to have this beautiful piece back in our work area.

We are always happy to receive a phone call from Andrew at The Philanthropic Collective (affectionately known as TPC). The Philanthropic Collective is a not-for-profit charity at the heart of the Hills within the Dandenong Ranges of Victoria. Their ethos is to create a secure environment within all their projects where children and young people feel safe and are safe so that they can flourish into kind, caring and loving people.
MotHs got the call of an excess of baby food, and we jumped to it. Our online FB members have benefited from TPC on many occasions. It’s no wonder they are the 2023 Yarra Ranges Council community group of the year.
Thank you to the whole team at TPC. We are looking forward to the upcoming Free Food Market too on November 1st.
Resilience Investment Framework Workshop
President Belinda Young participated in the Joint Victorian Distribution Businesses Resilience Investment Framework Preparation Workshop in October. The workshop provided an opportunity for locals to share their thoughts and stories, ask questions and inform the components of the framework and how it might be applied by the networks. Although locals have been aware of the deficiencies in the electricity supply system for some time, the 2021 storms highlighted these vulnerabilities like never before. The combined June, July, October, and December storms of 2021 during COVID lockdowns exposed the weaknesses in the infrastructure, the lack of coordination and cooperation between power distributors and other critical networks such as the NBN (that also rely on above-ground power poles) and mobile towers. Communication with customers and a poor understanding of the vulnerabilities, needs, and priorities were repeatedly voiced. What was clear from these stories was that collaboration between stakeholders is needed so that:
telecommunication can remain supported longer when the power grid is affected, and,
Power and NBN restoration must be conducted in a coordinated phased approach. We cannot have a reoccurrence of June 2021, where the NBN took 50 days longer than the power to be restored despite using the same power poles.
As climate change increases the likelihood of severe weather events in our region, the resilience of our power and telecommunication networks will be frequently put to the test. We hope that the feedback that was given at the workshop will highlight the need for improved services.

MotHs Inc. goes above and beyond for its community. In addition to running and maintaining our place-based MotHs Hub, we advocate on the issues we see, hear about and directly experience within our community. We facilitate connections to provide mother-to-mother emotional and physical assistance, provide timely information about community events and emergency preparedness and promote local businesses. This can’t be achieved without the support of subscribers. We appreciate each and every subscriber for keeping this community running.
